00:00, 31 января 2011

Last year was successful for the travel trade of Turkey, the country was visited by 28.7 mio foreign tourists, which is 6% more than in 2009. The tourism income reached 22 billion $. Tourist flow from Russia increased by 18% compared to 2009 and reached 3.1 mio guests. The Information Director of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Turkey Cumhur Guven Tasbas? gave this information to Interfax-Tourism.

Russian tourists take the second place in the arrivals rating after the guests from Germany that accounted for 4.5 mio visitors (+10% increase). Great Britain takes the third place (+12%), Iran is on the forth (+40%). Fifth place is held by Bulgaria.

More than 65% of Russians arriving to Turkey visited Antalya and Aegean coast. Besides that 20% stayed in Istanbul and 15% went to other Turkish regions. «Russia is one of the main markets for Turkey, - said Mr. Director. – This year we expect the increase of the Russian guests by 10 – 15% minimum. And by 2016 we count on welcoming up to 5 mio Russians per year».

In order to reach such results the ministry is planning to change the strategy of promotion of Turkey on our market. Before the country was focusing on the big Russian cities, mainly Moscow and St.Petersburg, now Turkey start working with Russian regions. And the country will promote not only beach tourism, but also cultural, religious, spa & health and other variants. For that purpose the advertising and promotional budget for Russia increased by 25% and reached 8 mio $.

This budget is intended as well for the financial support of the Russian touroperators and airlines that start operating regular or charter flights from Russia to various cities of Turkey that are not that well-known by our tourists. For example, a very interesting region of Cappadocia that is famous for Early-Christian churches cavated in the local mountains and amazing nature sites.

Mr. Cumhur Guven Tasbas? said that as of April this year Russians can visit Turkey without a visa for 30 days maximum. The arrival fee of 20$ is cancelled as well. Citizens of Turkey also don’t need a Russian visa if they stay in Russia not more than 30 days. «We realize that canceling this fee we loose tens of millions of $. But we hope to get more Russians visiting Turkey and their expenditures in Turkey will compensate these losses», - explained Mr. Director.
