00:00, 31 января 2011

35 killed and 126 injured - this is the aftermath of yesterday’s terrorist act in Domodedovo, status of late Monday evening. According to the preliminary information suicide bomber detonated 2 to  5 kg of TNT in the arrival zone of the airport.

This happened at 16.40 when a number of flights from CIS countries and Europe land in the airport. The airport services were interrupted for 10 minutes and later on the airport resumed its work in regular operation mode. The delays that occurred were not ultimate. Several flights of Transaero, Kogalymavia and Iberia were rerouted to Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo. There was a serious crowd and hustle at the entrance and exit due to the fact that Domodedovo staff was trying to check the baggage and hand luggage of all people leaving and entering the airport. Admittedly the security measures were yesterday strengthened in Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo too.

If such a terrorist act would happen one day earlier, on Sunday, when Domodedovo handles much more flights including popular tourist destinations the tragedy would have been even more far-reaching in terms of victims.

This terrorist act claimed life of a Japan-language interpreter Marina Babenko, born in 1965. She was meeting a group of tourists from Japan in the arrival zone.

Marina was a member of the Association of guides, that belongs to the Russian Union of Travel Industry.  Her Japanese was very good and she often worked with the high-ranking delegations from Japan. According to the President of the Association of guides Alexander Osipov Marina mainly worked with art-lovers and art-critics. She loved giving tours in the Tretyakov Gallery and the Pushkin Fine Arts Museum. She was an easy and cheerful person and always regarded problems with humor and irony.

Marina Babenko had a united and loving family. Two children, daughter, a student of Japanese department of the Institute of Asian and African Studies of the Moscow State University, Marina graduated from this Institute herself, and a schoolboy are left motherless. The daughter followed in the mother’s steps and already started working with Japaneese tourists.
