MFA stands on its advice against travel to Syria

08:07, 27 июля 2012

On Monday Russian MFA once again advised tourists not to visit Syria. The recommendation was for the first time issued last spring, however Russian diplomats claim it to be still applicable as the Middle East country continues to suffer from struggles between the authorities and the opposition.

Syria has never been a popular tourist destination in Russia, nevertheless some tour operators have been offering tours to this country, rich with unique historical sites. According to Ms. Ankhar Kochneva, director general of Jordan Club travel company, only three of their clients are now in Syria, and there are no other prepaid bookings. "We had some inquiries for September, but I can't say anything for sure as on August 4 Aeroflot promises to suspend it's service to Damascus" - explained Ms. Kochneva, adding that she personally sees no ground under such step.

"Those areas that are actually dangerous are completely closed for tourists. At that, Damascus and the Mediterranean coast are absolutely safe" - Jordan Club's director pointed out. Ms. Kochneva also told that even though it is a high tourist season in Syria now, local hotel prices are extremely low. A room in Damascus will stand in $30 a night, while on the seaside one may spend a day in a hotel for around $20.
