Rostourism reminds to avoid travel to Cairo
Due to escalation of conflict in Egypt’s capital Cairo Rostourism advises tour operators and travel agents against arranging of tourist trips to Cairo, and Russian tourists should avoid all travel to Cairo and other regions of the country not listed in the Rostoursm’s order №77 dated 1st of April 2011. Let us remind you that the order in question recommends to stick to Egypt’s Red Sea resorts. Besides that, Rostourism draws attention to practicability of group travel rather than individual trips to the said Red Sea resorts, booked through tour operators listed in the Joint Federal Register.
According to the reports of MFA of Russia, on October 9, 2011 massive demonstrations of Christian-Copts took place in Cairo, resulting in armed conflict with forces of law and order that injured 200 and claimed 24 people. The reason for the protest was arson of a church in Aswan province last week and the local authorities’ refusal to issue a restoration permit. As of today a curfew is in place in Cairo, the situation in the conflict areas is under full control of military and police forces.
