A unique item on display in Kaliningrad Museum of Amber

12:06, 24 сентября 2012

Kaliningrad Museum of Amber is exhibiting a panel painting called Rus’. The author of this work, Alexander Zhuravlev, is renowned for restoring the Amber Room in the Catherine Palace. The Rus’ panel consists of almost three thousand fragments and is considered to be the biggest amber mosaic in the world.

The panel painting resembles a triptych: the centerpiece depicts St. George striking the dragon with his spear, on the left we have a wise defender of Rus’, and on the right – a Russian mother holding a baby, as a symbol of hope and revival. The whole concept of the panel is confrontation between life and death, faith and disbelief, senility and youth, a confrontation between the past and the future. The mosaic was made with special technique, which is not really used nowadays by amber masters. It combines elements of Florentine mosaics with traditional amber composition. The only other amber work of comparable size was and is the Amber Room, walls of which are decorated with geometrical and floristic mosaics made of amber, says RIA Novosti.

The work is part of the exhibition from Evgeny Tatuzov’s gallery – The Amber House, which is sometimes called the new amber room. The exhibition holds over 70 items made from “sun rock”, all of them crafted by amber masters from Kaliningrad and Saint Petersburg. It is possible that the exhibition will become a permanent part of the museum’s exposition in the future.
